Thu, April 13, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Chicago Ballroom VIII

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate music education majors’ transition from postsecondary graduation into K-12 public school teaching positions. I analyzed data from a state longitudinal data system using descriptive and inferential statistics. Approximately half of all music education graduates immediately entered the teaching profession in the public schools, but there were observed variations year to year. Additionally, the majority of those who entered the teaching profession began their careers at the elementary school level. Full multivariate regression results and descriptive statistics on graduates, school characteristics, and teaching responsibilities will be presented following a disclosure risk review should this proposal be accepted. Implications for postsecondary recruitment, curricula, and state policy are discussed.
