Decades of motivation research have produced strong theory along with concrete recommendations for teachers. However, translating theory to practice faces barriers, as evidenced by heterogeneous intervention effects along with weak relationships between teacher practices and student motivation outcomes. In this study, students completed survey and interview questions before and after viewing brief, motivationally supportive chemistry lecture video clips. Quantitative and qualitative results revealed heterogeneity in student perceptions, along with evidence that personal characteristics, background experiences, and features of the videos themselves may play important roles in shaping students’ perceptions and responses to instruction. Results contribute important evidence toward a more elaborated theoretical explanation of the role of perception in mediating motivational effects of teacher practices.
