Where Is Initial Action Located in Urban Districts That Are Building Equity-Centered Principal Pipelines?

Abstract

In this paper, we discuss how eight large urban districts advance educational equity at the beginning of a cross-district equity-centered effort. The project is part of a larger research study that was funded by the Wallace Foundation in 2021 in conjunction with its Equity-Centered Principal Pipeline Initiative (ECPI). Our purpose is to make the ECPI districts’ theories of change visible and study the readiness, implementation, and results of each district’s efforts to build and sustain an equity-centered leadership pipeline. Our findings suggest that while all districts addressed some of the components of the leadership pipeline, the location of their actions varied from district to district. Factors that affected the location of district actions include approaches to equity and historical context.
