Dual enrollment (DE) offers high school students access to college courses during high school. Prior research suggests that DE participation improves high school and college outcomes for students, increasing their postsecondary momentum by improving their odds of attending college and improving first-year GPA, first-year persistence, and degree attainment. Despite evidence regarding the positive average impacts of DE, it’s unclear whether and how the structure and characteristics of DE courses shape student outcomes. Yet practitioners seeking to build effective DE programs need more information about which DE design features are most effective. This study uses statewide administrative data from Texas and descriptive and inferential statistics to estimate the relationships between DE course and instructor characteristics and students’ course and college outcomes.
