Social presence (SP), or individuals' perception of others being engaged as 'real people' in the same situation, is a crucial component in technology-rich learning environments. This paper reviews the major learning design, antecedents, and outcomes of social presence, and highlights major findings from the past two decades. After article selection and quality assessment, the paper synthesized the publication trend of social presence in learning contexts, and identified the major learning modes and types of technology applied in learning. The article offers a systematic review of 72 studies investigating the antecedents that predict SP or factors influenced by SP in technology-rich learning contexts. Finally, the paper discusses the implications of instructional application and research design on social presence in learning.
