Abstract

Use of self is a concept frequently accepted with professionals yet somewhat unclear. Authentic use of self is best practice in several professions, including teaching, and can be critical to the growth of a profession. This paper discusses research on early childhood students’ use of self and examines how the use of self can support holistic teaching by reflection and self-care. Data reveals the use of self can be a valuable strategy for flourishing components of a holistic curriculum including intentional relationships with children and families, community connections, body/mind connections, and soul connections. This study offers an awareness into holistic education and the relationship between the mind and body to help early childhood students see how to nurture that connection.
