Arts-Focused Holistic Education: Case Study of Phare Ponleu Selpak in Cambodia

Phare Ponleu Selpak is a vibrant arts-based educational hub in the bustling city Battambang, Cambodia. This paper uses documentation analysis and interviews with two experts to illuminate the impacts of arts-based holistic education in a post-conlift context. The educational opportunities offered by Phare serve local youth aged 3 to 18 and the Phare Circus, where many students perform, is well known in Battambang. Through this case study, I argue that the multi-faceted approach of Phare to provide holistic education opportunities to high need youth is a successful model as related to the goals of transformative learning (De Angelis, 2018) and reconciliation pedagogies (Ahluwali et al., 2012) and is a model with replicable aspects for potential use in other post-conflict communities.
