How Is Social Capital Assessed? A Systematized Literature Review

Thu, April 13, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 2, Huron

Abstract

Researchers have used a number of methods to measure social capital in a variety of contexts, yet little to no synthesis exists on how to measure social capital in education. This systematized literature review describes the scaling and survey design used to measure social capital; results from the 65 papers reviewed revealed the use of generators, social network analysis or Likert measures. These operationalizations are rooted in social network theory, where social capital is accessed through ones’ social network. This study provides important knowledge for new researchers assessing social capital and current researchers interested in the current state of the field.
