Preservice Teachers' Experiences of Learning How to Teach While Working as Long-Term Substitute Teachers

Abstract

Some school districts are addressing the teacher shortage by hiring pre-service teachers as long-term substitute teachers. While this practice may not impact a large number of pre-service teachers, it does pose problems for teacher educators who must contend with how to teach pre-service teachers who are also teaching full-time already. In this narrative inquiry study, we investigate the experiences of two pre-service teachers in a Master's and teacher licensure program. We found two themes related to issues with mentorship and feelings of being in-between a real and not real teacher. We provide recommendations for future work and polices in this area.
