Abstract

What are the key challenges facing the field of gifted education? In this qualitative study, we posed this question to some of the field’s most eminent leaders and scholars (n=47). Participants responded via email (n=27), and responses were coded, analyzed, and grouped into prominent categories and themes. Overwhelmingly, our respondents mentioned problems of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA). In addition, other significant issues included problems of identification, lack of clarity as to the conceptualization of giftedness and the purpose of gifted education, limited use of research-based practices, and limited support from outside the field. In this paper, we share the results of our study and discuss implications for moving the field forward.
