On Co-Developing Curriculum With and for Our Community: A Shared Narrative From the Field

Abstract

This study captures how scholar-practitioners, community members, teachers, and students draw from community funds of knowledge and cultural memories to collectively develop a curricular unit with and for the community. The researchers composed a shared reflective narrative of data collected from journal reflections, conversations on co-developing curriculum, and future projections and project possibilities. We draw from tenets of a critical pedagogy of place, Black sense of place, and community-based accountability to critically analyze: how our cultural identities are entangled in our scholarship and practice; how we collectively develop a curriculum that captures the stories of our community; and how we leverage our collective memories, to re/member, re/imagine, and re/construct futurities.
