Abstract

Academic freedom drives innovation and enhances the capacity of scholars and students to acquire and generate knowledge (Kinzelbach et al, 2021). However, academic freedom is being threatened by the rise of neoliberalism, academic capitalism, online learning, erosion of tenure, ideological imbalance, divisive political climate, self-censoring, and prioritization of student satisfaction. In this paper, I explain these threats and identify strategies to restore and expand academic freedom in the United States and in the United Kingdom. It is critical that we re-focus public attention on the academic freedom’s value, the threats it faces and strategies for protecting it.
