Supervising Students Who Are Engaged in Narrative Inquiry

Abstract

While there are many books and articles written about how to supervise doctoral students, we were interested in explorations into questions of doctoral supervision using narrative inquiry, a research methodology and design characterised by a relational ontology. As Clandinin and Connelly (2000) argue, “narrative inquiry is a way of understanding experience. It is a collaboration between researcher and participants. Elsewhere Clandinin and Rosiek (2007) highlighted the relational ontology of narrative inquiry. We watch with some amazement the number of references there are to narrative inquiry in research articles, books, theses, dissertations, and presentations. It is crucial that we work to develop strong scholarship in narrative inquiry that moves the field forward.
