"God, It's in Your Hands": The Spiritual Capital of Black Women Family Childcare Providers

Sun, April 16, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park, Floor: B2 Level, Imperial Ballroom

Abstract

Through the lens of Black feminist thought, this work expands on Yosso’s Community Cultural Wealth Model to suggest spiritual capital as another resource Communities of Color use to transform the effects of inequitable systems of race and class. This exploratory work was derived from a larger study in which the author explored how Black women family childcare providers supported the Black community throughout the social hardship of the COVID-19 pandemic. Findings suggest the providers engaged spiritual capital to navigate challenges, sustain themselves and their businesses, and educate young children during the uncertainty of their daily lives and the conditions of the pandemic. The discussion challenges white-dominant epistemologies that deny youth their right to wholeness within educational spaces.
