Educational studies rely on academic achievement to identify impact on student outcomes. Using a reliable and valid measure is critical to make claims about impact. This paper describes challenges related to recruitment and administration of student outcome assessments and the validation of a widely-administered district assessment used in its place to address these challenges. Findings show moderate to strong correlations between overall scores and subtests for iReady and WJ-IV in the domains of reading, oral language, and mathematics. The correlations suggest they measure related constructs and that this assessment substitution for confirmatory analyses is a valid way to measure outcomes for a study conducted in a district setting.
