Ethics of Care: A Leadership Dilemma or a Steering Force for Inclusive Early Childhood Education? (Poster 37)

Abstract

School leaders employ values to make leadership judgements in face of dilemmas. Care and compassion as values associated with inclusion (Booth, 2011) resonates with Noddings’s (1984) ethics of care. She argues that inclusion of minority group is premised upon teachers’ ability to develop caring relationships. This study is part of a larger qualitative research that focuses on dilemmas and value tensions in school leaders’ decision-making related to the inclusion of students with special educational needs in the arena of early childhood education in Hong Kong. This paper attends to the tensions involved in implementing inclusive practice in relation to the values of the school leader with a particular focus on an ideal of care derived from Noddings.
