The Marathon Continues: The Influence of Nipsey Hussle on Our Community-Engaged Courses

Abstract

The purpose of this conceptual paper is to illustrate how our awakening after the death of Nipsey Hussle, his music and life and our lived experiences influenced a redesign of our community engaged courses, with the hope of disrupting and informing teacher educators of best practices for teaching preservice teachers how to explore and unpack the assets and conditions of Black communities. As Black women teacher educators, after this trip, we realized that we had started the work of community-engaged teacher education, but we had lost the connection to our personal hoods. By conducting a Self-Study in Teacher Education Practices, we utilized our Hip-Hip identities, hoods, and the awakening we experienced, to redesign our community-engaged courses.
