Finding Our Truth Through Field Supervision: What Should Be and What Is

• In Event: Self-Study as Means of Providing Consequential Mentoring and Supervision Support

Abstract

In both K-12 and university classrooms, there are multiple truths operating simultaneously, distinct but interconnected. From the perspectives of three field supervisors of color, this self study seeks to elucidate the multiple competing and cooperating truths of teacher education and how teacher educators can navigate those truths as they support teacher candidates to do so as well. Through the process of this self-study several themes emerged regarding our search for a stronger understanding of the roles of field supervisors (FS) supporting teacher candidates (TC). They are: Building relationships, informed by and drawing on our experiences as classroom teachers, navigating tenstions (with sub-themes of: logistical barriers, state of schooling, and self), and identities matter. Concluding with recommendations and next steps.
