To provide more useful feedback strategies in digital game-based learning, this study developed a programming educational game from easy to complex game tasks and investigated the effects of dynamic feedback adjusting feedback contents based on the game difficulty and static feedback maintaining the same type of feedback on students’ learning. In addition, a lag sequence was used to analyze behavior patterns of learners. 105 university students participated in this experiment and were randomly assigned to four experimental conditions. These results showed that dynamic feedback could be effective in enhancing students’ learning achievement and gaming engagement. Furthermore, more detailed explanations offered for both the easy and difficult game tasks might decrease learners’ participation. The implications of these findings are discussed.
