The current study aimed to investigate (1) the overall effectiveness of digital game-based (DGB) STEM learning, and (2) the enhancement effect of added game-design elements in STEM learning. We performed two meta-analyses using three-level meta-analysis model. An overall medium effect size in first meta-analysis for the studies of “media comparison research” (g = 0.624, 95% CI [0.457, 0.790]), and an overall small effect size in second meta-analysis for the studies of “value-added research” were reported (g = 0.301, 95%CI [0.163, 0.438]). In addition, the moderator analysis revealed that three types of moderators significantly affected the overall effect in first meta-analysis, and two types of added game-design elements showed different enhancement effects in value-added studies.
