In this longitudinal investigation (N = 1,432 students in grades 5-8; 4 waves of measurement), we estimated reciprocal effects-models of three forms of academic boredom, namely boredom intensity (BO-I), boredom due to underchallenge (BO-U), and boredom due to overchallenge (BO-O), in mathematics and German. We found positive auto-regressive paths for all forms of boredom. Reciprocal effects showed differential patterns for mathematics and German. Construct correlations showed changing patterns over time, especially between BO-U and BO-O, moving from positive correlations at grade 5 (mathematics .19, .22; German: .42, .40) to zero-correlations (mathematics at grade 6: -.01, n.s.; German at grade 8: .09, n.s.), and, for mathematics, to an originally expected negative correlation at grade 8 (-.33). Results and implications are discussed.
