Abstract

The Covid-19 Pandemic has affected adolescents' learning, particularly for those from low socioeconomic status (SES) families. The present study examined math learning loss and its heterogeneity and explored its possible underlying reasons. Using the Propensity Score Matching method, 678 adolescents aged 10-15 in China were selected from the China Family Panel Study database (339 for the years 2016 and 2020). Results showed that during the Pandemic, (1) there was about 12% loss in math achievement; (2) the learning losses were more significant for low SES adolescents (20%) than high SES adolescents (8%); (3) parents’ home involvement and adolescents’ educational expectation partly explained this learning loss gap, and the latter one is more prominent.
