The stability of cognitive abilities is of great relevance for diagnostic practice as decisions based on cognitive ability measures often have long-term consequences. Moreover, for educational research, it is of utmost importance to understand how this stability varies between different age groups, contexts, and test instruments. We conducted a meta-analysis of longitudinal studies investigating the rank-order stability of cognitive abilities. A total of 1203 test-retest correlation coefficients were compiled from 199 longitudinal studies investigating a total of 82,360 participants. We found a mean rank-order stability of ρ =.77. Cognitive abilities showed low stability in preschool children and consistently high stability from late adolescence to late adulthood. Stability varied between different cognitive abilities and between different test instruments.
