Abstract

Based on situated expectancy-value theory, we investigated the latent profiles of middle school students’ expectancy, value, and cost beliefs in English learning. In addition, we compared motivational profiles regarding academic outcomes and personal characteristics. Latent profile analyses based on a sample of 1400 Chinese middle school students identified four profiles: adaptive, maladaptive, average-all, and high-all. Significant differences in achievement, task disengagement, test anxiety, and passive procrastination were observed among the four latent profiles, drawing a more comprehensive picture of students’ avoidance motivation in English learning. Moreover, the four latent profiles have revealed meaningful associations with students’ gender and socioeconomic status, providing more implications for the construction of profile membership.
