Successful Practices of Novice Urban Physical Education Teachers

Abstract

Guided by culturally relevant physical education (Flory & McCaughtry, 2011), the purpose was to examine successes of novice physical educators in urban schools. Two participants completed five journal entries and five individual video interviews lasting between 45-90 minutes each, which were recorded and transcribed. Two authors independently coded the data using open and axial coding and followed the collaborative qualitative analysis procedures suggested by Richards and Hemphill (2018). We present two main themes: building relationships within the school and community, and curricular re-alignment. This research is significant because it highlights elements of teaching that empowered the participants. Teacher preparation and mentoring programs can apply these successes to help reduce or prevent teacher attrition, especially in urban schools.
