Social and emotional (SE) skills are increasingly popular in educational contexts. We surveyed 11th-grade students and parents/caregivers on their perceived importance of SE skills for student success. We also asked them to define, broadly, which skills they believed were most important for student success. Results show favorable ratings for SE skills by both students and parents/caregivers. Furthermore, when asked to list any skills associated with student success, both groups listed SE skills more frequently than skills in any other category. Favorability for SE skills was high across student race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and scores on an academic achievement test. Taken together, results show high school students and their parents/caregivers highly value SE skills and deem them key constituents of student success.
