Exploring Followers' Perceptions and Experiences With Abusive Leaders in Higher Education: A Qualitative Study

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to illuminate the voices of five higher education professionals on their experiences with abusive leaders in higher education. The major goals of the study were to 1) to explore the perspectives and experiences of the participants with abusive leaders in higher education and 2) to understand the strategies used by the participants to navigate the work environment. Five participants that have worked under abusive supervisors were purposively selected for this study. Individual interviews was conducted. Findings on their experiences revealed four themes that include leadership incompetence, self-centered, micromanagement, and intimidation. Results on strategies utilized revealed two themes of forming alliances and being authentic. The findings from this study have leadership, practical, and policy implications.
