Racial Blind Spots in College Access Reporting: Antiracist Approaches to Counter Normative Narratives in Reporting (Poster 38)

Abstract

Historically there has been an abundance of federally funded programs in racially marginalized communities. The data acquired from these communities are overrepresented, and therefore researchers should be skeptical of the ways that these data are reported and used. Our study will move from a static report, which demonstrates the total number of students in a GEAR UP cohort enrolled in college immediately following high school graduation into a nuanced reporting structure. This is done by disaggregating the data and comparing the postsecondary enrollment rates of one marginalized group to the those of the same racial background, but 5 and 10 years prior. Findings suggest that federal program reporting does not account for the historical oppressions faced by each racial group.
