Abstract

Principals are increasingly tasked with implementing social and emotional learning (SEL) initiatives in their schools, though a dearth of scholarship elucidates the barriers they face when so doing. This phenomenological interview study identifies the insights and experiences of leaders implementing SEL initiatives across 4 school districts in Georgia, and centers how SEL (in)competencies among teachers, instability in personnel and programs, and tradeoffs induced by time and resource constraints hinder their ability to implement SEL effectively.
