Abstract

Although research on teacher educators is emerging, most of the literature focuses on university-based teacher educators. We push back against this positioning to reconsider who is considered as teacher educators particularly in the context of teacher education partnerships. Situated in an urban teacher residency program that partners with high-need schools, we explore the complex work of teacher education and teacher educator identity development through the lens of experienced mentor teachers. Using Hargreaves’ emotional geographies as a frame, our findings demonstrated how mentors’ relationships with residents expanded their emotional geographies, such that they began developing identities as school-based teacher educators. Further research is needed to explore the geographies of teacher education partnerships to enhance the understanding and practice of all members.
