Craftland Is Mathland: Mathematical Insight and the Generative Role of Fiber Crafts (Poster 24)

Abstract

Lifelong learning in mathematics is a predictor of several positive life outcomes and is crucial for economic progress and cultural development. However, girls’ interest in math and science drops off after fourth grade. Textile, fiber, and needlework crafts are seen as viable alternatives to traditional STEM tools and practices with the potential to broaden participation in STEM fields and improve learning outcomes. We asked: What features of craft support lifetime engagement in math? We took a constructionist approach to an embedded ethnography of crafting communities across the United States, including semi-structured interviews with 65 crafters. Findings suggest that offering a range of experiences and opportunities in mathematics may be necessary to welcome more learners into authentic, sustained participation in math.
