Integration or Relocation? Lived Experiences of Those Directly Affected by School Desegregation (Poster 36)

Thu, April 13, 4:40 to 6:10pm CDT (4:40 to 6:10pm CDT), Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: East Tower - Exhibit Level, Riverside West Exhibition Hall

Abstract

To document issues of the process of school desegregation, we explored the lived experience of a small group of Black individuals who, as a youth, experienced the transition from segregated to desegregated schools, and analyzed the data through the lens of truth, knowledge, and sympathy (Du Bois, 1935). We found the understanding, compassion, and awareness the participants experienced in their segregated schools were not present in their desegregated schools. Our research suggests that The Brown vs. The Board of Education ruling resulted in procedural changes in education but did not address social changes, particularly in urban area schools, which persist today.
