Advancing Equitable Outcomes in STEM Doctoral Education: The Effect of Departmental Advising and Guidance

Sat, April 15, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Sheraton Ballroom IV and V

Abstract

The underrepresentation of women and racial/ethnical minorities in the STEM professoriate is one of the national concerns in U.S. education. Despite its significant weight in faculty application, publication record has received little attention in research in doctoral education. In the current study, we examined the PhD exit survey from STEM disciplines at a large public university in order to gain a better understanding of publication record in STEM doctoral education. Our results revealed significant racial/ethnical disparity but no sex disparity regarding PhD publication record. Our study also suggested that departmental advising and guidance increases the odds that students deliver papers at national meetings, offsetting the racial disparity.
