Abstract

Using a case study design, we describe the experiences and outcomes of engaging in focused instruction about reflexivity from the perspectives of ten doctoral learners enrolled in a graduate mixed methods research (MMR) course. We argue that because reflexive practice is key to developing proficiency in mixed methods research, MMR course learners benefit from the opportunity to learn about its practical value and engage in its application. Our case description highlights how and why reflexivity within the MMR course activities and assessments was an impactful experience for learners both individually as a group. We advance reflexive practice as an essential training experience for enhancing methodological transparency and ethical reasoning in MMR with implications transferable for diverse research training contexts.
