Abstract

This paper summarizes the case study fieldwork undertaken to understand how 15 of California’s community colleges have responded to the statewide developmental education reform known as AB 705. Institutions participating in the study were placed on a scale of implementation; based on courses and cocurricular supports offered, placement processes, and guidance provided to students, we will sample five institutions classified as high, middle, and low implementers and then interview institutional administrators, staff, faculty, and students to gather their varied perspectives on the implementation of policies and practices aligned with AB 705, as well as probing the financial and human resources and costs required for implementation.
