Validating a New Academic Acculturation Scale: A Preliminary Report (Poster 37)

Sun, April 16, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: East Tower - Exhibit Level, Riverside West Exhibition Hall

Abstract

The current study validates a new academic acculturation scale (AAS) designed as a diagnostic tool to assess students’ ability to adjust to their academic environment and be academically successful. Rasch analyses of an initial version of the instrument consisting of 28 items revealed high item reliability of .96 with a separation index of 4.91. All except four items fitted the Rasch model. Rating scale analysis confirmed the linearity of the instrument. Based on the outcome of the initial analysis and additional research, a new 36-item version of the AAS with five subscales was created. It will be validated using the Rasch measurement model. Concurrent validation with other constructs including students’ GPA, ethnic identity, and self-esteem will also be conducted.
