Understanding How Generative Activities Affect Performance Across Question Types (Poster 25)

Abstract

Inference questions that ask readers to apply information from the text to new situations or contexts are commonly found on standardized reading test such as the MCAT and the GRE. The current studies tested how various generative activities (retrieval practice, explanation) may affect performance across question types and especially on those that require application. A follow-up study sought to understand what cognitive abilities predict performance across question types. Although generative activities have often been found to aid learning, the current study identifies a condition in which performance on application questions is harmed by retrieval practice.
