Abstract

Educational attainment lessens a youth’s chance of involvement with the justice system, and helps youth reenter society successfully if already system involved. In the 2018-2019 school year, more than 300,000 students in programs designed for neglected and delinquent youth received educational services funded by Title I, Part D. However, little research has explored the characteristics and outcomes of these students. This descriptive study begins to fill in the absence of analyses on education of youth in the criminal justice systems by: (1) examining the demographics; and (2) examining trends in the academic and career outcomes supported by Title I, Part D funded programs. Data for this study come from publicly available program data released by the U.S. Department of Education.
