We aim to widen the understanding of how learning actions are mediated multimodally in formative Change Laboratory (CL) interventions. Our interactional video-data consists of CL sessions and subsequent meetings with teachers, principals and researchers in a Finnish elementary school. Drawing from CHAT, we analysed how multiple modalities – discourse, physical CL space, materials and embodied actions – mediated the participants' expansive learning, contributing to the externalisation and implementation of distributed leadership in the school community, and detailing its developmental trajectory. Our study adds to the research about formative intervention settings by focusing on multimodality. The study illuminates how multimodal learning actions enhance the development of new pedagogical and leadership solutions for the consequential educational change called for in this year’s AERA.
