The Influence of Past Experiences and Motivations on Current Trust in Science (Poster 16)

Abstract

While there is a growing amount of attention focused on generating interest in science from a young age, there exists a glaring issue in dealing with the lack of trust members of the public have in regard to science. Our research seeks to understand the impact of prior experiences on one’s current motivations and trust in science. Our objective is to understand the connection between prior motivation experiences in science and how those experiences influence one’s current view of scientists and their trust in science today. Through an analysis of 108 survey responses, we found that the nature of one’s prior motivations, including course value and self-efficacy, have a significant effect on one’s current trust and mistrust of science today.
