Organizing for Racial Equity: Defining and Operationalizing Racial Equity in K–12 Schools

Fri, April 14, 11:40am to 1:10pm CDT (11:40am to 1:10pm CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Chicago Ballroom VII

Abstract

Drawing from a body of work on critical policy analysis and community voice in education decision-making, the purpose of this study is to understand how education leaders, organizers, and advocates think about and make sense of racial equity in a large city on the east coast. Using a landscape analysis (Warren-Grice, 2021), it identifies what community organizers consider to be the key issues preventing racial equity in K-12 schools, and what avenues organizers seek out to create change in NYC DOE schools. Funding equity is central to many organizations’ definition of racial equity. This study centers and integrates the needs, concerns, interests, and priorities of community members and those who advocate on their behalf.
