Centering Diversity in English Curriculum: A Critical Race Curriculum Analysis

Abstract

Our study proposes a Critical Race Curriculum analysis of the English Department’s literature offerings at a regional public comprehensive university. It examines how traditional curricula centers whiteness at the core of course development and teaching instruction, providing an Anglocentric narrative that eclipses the diverse histories of racism and colonialism that shape the experience of many social groups. Offering Latinidad and Ethnic Studies’ approaches as the basis for the critical framework used in assessing and reconsidering the English curriculum, our study advocates for the centering of ethnic literature classes as an ethical imperative in education.
