Vertical Transfer: A Qualitative Exploration of Student Experiences

Abstract

This study explores sense of belonging throughout the vertical transfer experience in students transferring from 2-year to 4-year higher education institutions. By extending Paton et al.’s (2015) vertical transfer phase model through Vaccaro and Newman’s (2016) model of student sense of belonging more comprehensive insights into the ways transfer students feel like they do or do not belong throughout their transfer journey are gained. Through the methodological tool of context analysis, this study explores the 441 open-ended survey answers of transfer students in the US. The findings have implications for the ways in which both 2- and 4-year institutions support their transfer populations and promote a high degree of experienced sense of belonging throughout all phases of the transfer process.
