Middle School Incidental Information Literacy (MiSIIL): Assessing Middle School Students' Skills When Evaluating Incidental Information (Poster 15)

Sat, April 15, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: East Tower - Exhibit Level, Riverside West Exhibition Hall

Abstract

This poster showcases the design and development of MiSIIL (Middle School Incidental Information Literacy; pronounced “missile”), a tool to assess middle school students’ skills when evaluating incidental information. Using design-based implementation research (DBIR) within the context of a research-practice partnership (RPP), a 27-item assessment was developed in Qualtrics. Item difficulty ranged from 13.73% to 94.12% with an average item difficulty level falling in the moderate range at 55.75%. Discussion at the poster session will include a comparison of item level difficulty across grade levels and possible revisions to items that were seemingly too easy or hard. Attention will also be drawn to items falling within the moderate range and similarities and differences among them.
