Unpacking Consequential Learning Through Family Perspectives on Learning: During and Beyond the Pandemic

Abstract

This study describes the perspectives of families of color about their children’s learning during an after-school tutoring program in the community throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. We drew from sociocultural and critical literacy theories and literature on family-school partnerships to address the research question “What are the perspectives of families of color when it comes to their children’s learning?” Relying on interview data from four parents and our researchers’ journals, we engaged in Narrative Inquiry to highlight the relevant knowledge that we co-constructed with families as a way to unpack ‘learning that matters.’ Results of this study revealed pandemic-related issues as well as the broader systemic inequities that families of color faced.
