Abstract

During the COVID-19 pandemic, English for academic purposes (EAP) programs around the world moved online; however, how these programs supported students’ additional language socialization in post-secondary contexts is not fully understood. This qualitative study set out to identify the elements of an online EAP program that supported additional language socialization. Data collection consisted of an online questionnaire (n = 9) and a semi-structured interview (n = 3). Thematic analysis pointed to skills development, community and culture, learning environments, collaboration, support networks, and cross-disciplinary connections as being part of online additional language socialization. These themes can inform the return to in-person EAP programs and underscore a holistic understanding of post-secondary English as an additional language teaching and learning.
