More Than Nice White Parents? The Discursive Strategies of White Parents Organizing Against School Closures

Sun, April 16, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Sheraton Ballroom IV and V

Abstract

This study examines how Parents for Equity (PFE), a group of white and/or socio-economically privileged parents, organize for school equity via their opposition to school closures that disproportionately impact majority Black schools. PFE’s organizing efforts take place in Oakland, California in the highly privatized Oakland Unified School District. The findings of this study illustrate the constraints and possibilities of these parents’ organizing efforts in relation to their allyship to the communities most impacted by school closures and their (in)ability to navigate the more privately funded parent organizing groups who support school closures.
