Abstract

Through faculty mentoring, doctoral students may have the opportunity to learn to become researchers and improve their knowledge base and research skills. However, online graduate education is growing and a majority of online students attend part-time and have jobs and families. These factors can limit students’ ability to participate in collaborative research and distract them from their academic goals. Twenty-four faculty from the Educational Technology field responded to an online survey about strategies to mentor online doctoral students during research experiences. Quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed by looking at themes related to the attributes included in the Framework for Mentoring Doctoral Students including four academic attributes: competence, availability, induction, and challenge; and the two emotional attributes: communication and emotional.
