Early Childhood Preservice Teachers' Experiences and Perceptions of Developing STEM Literacy

Abstract

This study explores the ways pre-service ECE teachers conceptualize STEM content to ascertain their experiences and perceptions as a result of a newly designed semester-long STEM course. This insight into our student teachers' experiences and level of preparedness will support our efforts to increase career relevancy during teacher preparation. To do so, we explored the following research questions: 1) What are student teachers’ opinions and perspectives about STEM in ECE and how did it change over the course of the semester? and 2) How did the ECE STEM course prepare student teachers for classroom instruction in STEM?
