Building Foundational Knowledge of Social and Emotional Learning With Preservice Teachers

Sun, April 16, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park, Floor: B2 Level, Imperial Ballroom

Abstract

This mixed method study examines data collected in the first year of implementation of a Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) specialty endorsement offered to undergraduate pre-service teachers as an add-on during their teacher preparation program at a small liberal arts college. The SEL specialty consists of 3 courses, grounded in literature on the importance of SEL for teachers, and designed to cultivate ‘SEL-ready teachers’ who are equipped with foundational knowledge of SEL and how to implement it. This presentation will outline the content of the courses as well as findings from analyses of qualitative and quantitative data collected in the first year of the SEL specialty from the first cohort of pre-service teachers who selected the endorsement.
